A neighborhood shop, not a chain
Downtown San Diego Auto Repair has been fixing cars at 1619 G St for 25 years, long enough that a lot of our work now comes from the same downtown drivers coming back.
What we specialize in
Our day-to-day is brakes, engine repair, and general repairs and maintenance, plus the routine work that keeps a car off the tow truck: oil changes, tune-ups, electrical diagnosis and cooling system repairs. We also do smog checks in house.
Most of the cars we see are city cars: short trips, hard stops, hill climbs, long stretches parked in a garage. That kind of use wears specific things first, and after 25 years downtown we know what to check before you have to ask.
Our approach is simple. Diagnose it properly, quote it before we touch anything, and tell you honestly if the fix can wait.
A shop only stays open 25 years one way
By not selling work that doesn't need doing. A lot of our customers first came in for something small, an oil change, a battery, a noise they weren't sure was anything, and kept coming back because the estimate matched the invoice. That's the whole strategy.
Being downtown helps too. We're on G St between the ballpark and City College, an easy walk from East Village, the Gaslamp, Little Italy and Cortez Hill. Dropping a car off doesn't cost you half a day.
